My 10 Wine Blogger Values (#MWWC10)

wine-stain1-3 This month’s Challenge was a bit of a conundrum for me. I thought the theme was great but I struggled a bit coming up with some coherent thoughts. After vacillating for some time (and with the deadline nearing),  I decided to come up with my Ten Commandments of Wine Blogging.

  1. Produce great content. This (to me at least) sounds hard, but it is actually a lot harder than it sounds. I sit at my computer far longer than I should, trying to come up with the proper pun, the correct connection, the appropriate alliteration. It’s tough. I am sure I do not always succeed, but that is the aim. (Creating top ten lists is not considered “good” content in my book, although they generate a ton of hits.)
  2. Publish regularly. Now this is hard. I try to publish at least five times a week, and that is a bit…

Drink what you like.

I’ve said it so many times in my wine career, I’ve lost count.  Well into the millions, if not billions.  I’m not going to lie and say that I didn’t inwardly cringe a bit whenever a customer just loooooooved their $5 bottle of cloyingly sweet because 500lbs of sugar were dumped into the barrel red wine.  Do you have something else?  Just like it, but in white or blush?  A nice crisp sparkling muscato hinting of peaches and apples?  A beautiful rosato bursting with so much fruitiness that you don’t realize no sugar has been added?  Nope.  They were all about the $5 bottle of sweet red.   They liked the taste and they loved the price point.

And red wine is good for my heart, right?  Well, maybe not that red.  It has too much added sugar.  Let me introduce you to something my cousin likes to call jacuzzi…

Did someone mention value?

“The world is full of value wines and valuable wines, but the two couldn’t be more disparate.  Unfortunately, value wines get served at events, especially weddings, when you should be serving valuable wines.  So what separates the two?” — the Sybarite

The preceding quote from last month’s Wine Writing Challenge winner, The Sybarite, inspired me to hop on the keyboard and present my hypothesis on the wine value proposition. My quest for the finest of cheap wines has been particularly menacing due to my current domicile in a highly regarded Californina AVA. Bringing a cheap bottle of wine to a soirée can elevate tensions akin to the unrest of an Arab Spring. Flashing a cheap bottle at a more menacing event, like a farmer’s market, can be highly precarious as the picnic snob set are infamous for carrying a concealed corkscrew of restaurateur quality.

80% of the people who drink wine pick something up at the store, and drink it that day.  They enjoy wine, but that’s the end of it. They might be swayed be a high scoring wine for a low price at the shop, but that’s it. And they could care less what any wine writer or blogger thinks.

For the remaining 20%, there seems to be a battle of right and wrong, my preference or yours.  Wine Spectator, Robert Parker, or New California Wine, anti-taste elite.  Whatever happened to celebrating the wide variety of wines available for those of us who care to pay…

There are so many ways to approach the topic of value. It is easy to look at it purely on the basis of dollar and cents. After much thoughts, and mostly done while in the shower unfortunately, I felt that it might be interesting to approach it unconventionally. So this post has gone through several re-writings and editing.

The subject of value in relation of wine can go beyond its value.  Alone, it will sit on the shelf collecting dust. Its worth will always be tied closely to us the moment we take it off that shelf, revealing glimpses of who we are. I am not referring to the depth of our pockets for it. But our decisions as to how we access, handle and share them with the our friends.

#MWWC 10 – Values


This is my first foray into the Monthly Wine Writing Challenge (known as #MWWC to those who participate), which (rather unsurprisingly) is a monthly creative writing challenge to write a piece on a topic chosen by last month’s winner. Last month’s winner, The Sybarite, chose the theme “values”. I’ve long read and enjoyed the entries for the #MWWC and thought that it was high time that I gave it a whirl. So here goes…

We talk about “value” a lot when discussing wine. Trouble is value can mean different things to different people; it is intrinsically subjective. This is because the very concept of value is tied up with our beliefs, experiences, means, morality and pretty much everything else that makes us up. The Germans have an excellent word that sums this concept up, Weltanschauung; there isn’t really an adequate literal translation, but it is effectively the way that you…

Clients, Environment, People and Community


MWWCIt has become fashionable for businesses to have “values”: a published framework of standards to define and reinforce the business’ culture. ( I know, I’m relapsing into HR doublespeak.  Don’t shoot me.  Malolactic fermentation.  Chaptalisation.  Organoleptic.  And  I’m back in the room.)  At my old law firm, our values were “Clients, Environment, People and Community”.  (They always had capital letters.)

After conducting numerous “employee engagement” sessions attempting to impress upon bored trainees the importance of these values, I left the firm, breathing a sigh of relief that I had put them values behind me. However, when Jeff announced that the Sybarite, winner of last month’s challenge, had chosen “values” as the theme for this month’s challenge, they kept coming back to haunt me, my brain firing links to wine.


I suppose that the relevance of clients depends on which aspect of wine we’re talking about. You could argue…
