Being Serendipity


I like being the serendipity for others, especially on our beloved bike trips, where we’re on a quest in a foreign land, on unknown routes and paths, for adventure feasts of the senses worth recounting over glasses of wine and dinner each evening with our pilgrim podmates.

Some of the best stories we literally bring to the dinner table are the ones of serendipity following hardship. Because we almost to a person fail to ever bother to get in shape and train before the trip begins, there is legendary hardship at the beginning of every trip… in fact, all throughout the trip, because we still aren’t even fit by the end of 10 days or so, not enough to avoid hardship. Serendipity: My #MWWC13 Entry….


This was a very early entry into the Monthly Wine Writing Challenge. As fate would dictate, I felt compelled to write my post when the theme, serendipity, presented itself.

I have enjoyed visiting Palm Springs, California for years. It is a magical place where one can attend a dinner party and meet television personalities, billionaire philanthropists, famous authors, fashion designers, esteemed artists and scoundrels all in one sitting (like keep an eye on your Social Security number.) It does have a dark, subversive side beneath all the frivolity and the experience is best described as being in a Fellini movie. The eccentricities, dry heat and high season creates the perfect opportunity for unexpected fortune and sadly, misfortune. #MWWC13 – Serendipity is Fantastic!

MWWCThere’s a self-abusive, yet strangely entertaining, monthly event in wine writing circles called the Monthly Wine Writing Challenge. I’ve copped out the last few themes but was recently shamed and frankly harassed by last month’s winner, Anatoli of Talk-A-Vino. As the worthy winner, Anatoli got to choose this month’s theme – Serendipity. Serendipity – I distinctly remember a children’s book about a sea creature called Serendipity but that plagiarized story might not qualify.
